Saints and their Attributes

Here is a list of saints that have been painted on Devon rood screens. Their traditional attributes and celebration (feast) days are included. On the Devon screens not all the attributes are shown. For example, St Ambrose is never depicted with a beehive. There were more than 50 feast days - as well as Sundays - over the natural year. Before the Reformation these feast days were important to the local community. A lot of agricultural labour ceased on the day and although people had a holiday - attendance to mass and other services was expected. The saint's day was a day to celebrate.
